The Coming Out Cuba Foundation (COC), a nonprofit organization that works to reveal the gay pre-revolutionary Cuban culture and help to build a new one, introduces their first ever "La Otra Cuba" Art Exhibition.
This groundbreaking exhibit, hosted by COC Ambassador Athena Dion, takes you into the world of Cuba's gay community both past and present, a part of the island's artistic history, from art to literature to music, that has been greatly overlooked until now. COC is on a continual mission to collect, preserve and present Cuba's rich gay history with their new heritage program, La Otra Cuba, led by Program Director Rich Denis.
Enjoy light bites by Pinch Kitchen as the celebration kicks off with the unveiling of COC's La Otra Cuba Art Exhibition housed at the innovative and colorful #ShareArtPopUp gallery. Airbrush Hero by Avi Ram from the television show Skin Wars will perform his impressive body airbrushing camouflage (Cuban inspired) LIVE.
As the evening progresses, the celebration will take to the Biscayne Blvd. parking lot of the Antiques & Design Mall where DJ Ralph Sosa will be pumping out the best Latin and dance beats.

Cuba's rich tradition of queer artistry, which stretches back centuries, has been largely kept secret. In fact, press reports in the late nineteenth century are riddled with depictions of a complex and thriving gay subculture. By the twentieth century many of Cuba’s most popular writers, artists and musicians either identified as homosexual and/or expressed queer subjectivities that contributed to the formation of a culture steeped in a distinctly Cuban essence, known as Cubanidad. By the 1950s, a culturally rich yet politically tumultuous era, Cuba’s gay subculture was thriving like never before, especially within the bounds of Havana’s storied nightlife.
“La Otra Cuba” is only but a part of Coming Out Cuba’s mission to uncover and reveal the country’s pre-revolutionary LGBTQ culture through collecting, preserving and presenting information about the gay Cuban forgotten culture. The Foundation’s broader goals include the building of an archive that would showcase video testimonies from the actual participants of that culture from the 1950s through the 1960s. The digitization of these archives will allow for an interactive web platform that will ensure their preservation for generations to come. The archive will also contain a wide range of media including literature, photography, correspondence and news clippings.
